Well, it’s x-mas crunch time (already) and I’m finding that I’m going to have to get really creative in order to give gifts to everyone that I’d like to.
I was hoping that all of you vixens out there could help me with some gift ideas that are nice, but that I can do on a very tight budget. I knit, sew and make with the craftiness in general.
Thanks!

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 12:38 PMone year i made nifty gifts *and* cleaned out my fabric stash by making gorgeous, french-seamed pillow cases for everyone... you can make them in any fabric, and the best part is that they are very personalized!

Tue, November 27, 2007 - 12:38 PMDo you know the budget you'd like to limit to? -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 1:22 PMWell I can't spend more than like $80 for about twenty people...eek I'm doomed. I hate being broke. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 2:04 PMmost of my inexpensive gift ideas come from using up my stash, so let usknow what you have on hand, and i bet we can come up with tosmething. things i have done in the past:
- great christmas ornaments that were able to mail or put in a holiday card envelope
- the pillow cases cost me almost NOTHING.. you can use just 3/4 yard... use terry cloth, satin, jersey, cotton, lace... anything! even if you buy 20 yards of $4 fabric (average), you can make a pillow case for everyone
- nifty bags... i made cosmetics bags for women and folding wallets or pencil cases for men.. i used all the odd zippers, snaps, buttons, velcro, eyelets, laces, piping, rick rack, trims and unusual fabrics i could find in my stash and everyone was surprised to find i had done them all... took a lot of time, but if was essentially FREE to me.
- notepads/stationary... if you have a computer and printer you can make personalized notepads for each person... just design a 1/4 sheet of notepad for each, print out a stack (use cheap paper), then have the local print shop gum the edges and trim to size.. that should cost about $10 max. you can even buy plain white envelopes and make personalized with their name/address to go with it. you may have to buy ink cartridges.
- clever magnet design. if you are really clever and have good design style, come up with a signature design for a refrigerator magnet . you can use printer, scrapbook stuff, sew a stuffed shape, painted wood.. beads, anything you have on hand... be sure to sign each one and put into a pretty box/envelope for gifting
- something funny. the best thing for me is that i gift to my whole extended family, who are altogether in one room. one year i bought a bunch of those tiny colorful knit gloves (they look too small to put your hand in, but they stretch like mad), and gave each a pair of unmatched gloves. they had to go around the room to find the matching partner, so it turned into chaotic fun! cheap for me, fun for everyone, and of course, great packaging made it a memorable gift giving.
anyway, tell us what you have on hand besides cash, i am sure we can come up with a good idea. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 3:10 PMYou Crafty Vixens rock my world!
Let's see... I have:
Tons of fabric (a lot of pink for some reason)
Billions of buttons
Yarn
Scrap booking supplies (fancy paper, stickers, ribbon and the like)
Note cards galore
I save broken jewelry so I have a lot of that, though it's mostly belly dance stuff
Trim and beads
Stuffing for dolls or pillows
Acrylic paints
Glitter
I'm sure there's more stuff.
I'd also be interested in recycled crafts. I know you can do nifty things with those horrid white shopping bags that I have a ton of. Or old magazines?
Also, if anyone has any ideas for my twin nephews, they are 17 months old.
I really, really appreciate your suggestions! Thanks!

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 3:48 PMI saw a craft tutorial on ironing plastic grocery bags, maybe you could make bibs. Although maybe that's for their parents...
Also, button mosaics. If you have any picture frames you're not using you could mosaic/assemblage them, and add a picture--or not. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 10:54 PMWhat you've got on hand, you could try:
Randomly attaching various trims and buttons and yarn, painting designs, etc onto fabric stretched into cheap embroidery hoops (smaller ones are $1 or $2 at Walmart), make a ruffle to go around the outside of it, or if you have lace trim that that was the right size and stiffness. This kind of thing: www.etsy.com/view_listing.php only I was thinking more abstract designs - but, whatever kinds of designs you could come up with.
I made a really fun wall hanging, in imitation of a landscape quilt by gluing pieces of fabric onto a cardboard backing, in different layers, and creating characters out of shapes and trim and buttons. I wish I had a picture of it, but no digital camera. This would be more time-consuming than the embroidery hoop wall-hangings, but if you've got kids you can draft into helping, it's a blast to get people involved.

Tue, November 27, 2007 - 11:45 PMIf there's anyone suitable for gift certificates (you know, the evening of baby sitting or a walk in the park ones) you could use collage to make the actual certificate.
-
Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 8:07 AMthose embroidery hoops make great earring-holders for the ladies on your list. just stretch a thin fabric over the hoop, decorate the edges, and - voila! - you have a nifty place to hang all your earrings!

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 6:54 PMhey there. have you heard of skulpey( i think that that is how you spell it) it is a polymer clay that you can mold and then bake in the oven. one year I bought two packages and made necklaces for my cousins( preteen girls )one said fashionista and another said dreamer. i can't remember the third one. but i also made "pocket stones" with reminders on them( you are beautiful... i love you.. breathe) that i painted with fingernail polish after they cooled. the girls loved them. i don't know if this helps. i also make inspiration boxes, i get tins fron the thrift store and paint them and then fill with happy thoughts. you could do certificates. hand design them, and give coupons for a walk on a summer day, or for christmas I gave out babysitting service certificates. ( choose something that you are good at:)they were much loved and every single one was redeemed. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 12:50 AMI made sachets once.... every time I trimmed my lavender plant I hung the trimmings in the garage. When Xmas came around, I used my scrap fabric and cookie cutters to cut out shapes, sew them together, fill with dried lavender and close. The easiest (quickest) shapes were the star and heart. If you want to use animal shapes, enlarge the cutter on a xerox because when sewing the legs it gets rather tight and difficult to fill.
I know Michaels sell potpourri being that it is too late now to dry herbs! ;-) -

You could do something similar with home made cookies wrapped in a homemade hanky tied with ribbon.

Thu, November 29, 2007 - 1:00 PMFor your nephews I'd make them a matching pair of monkey sox. Would have to make sure you made them extra tough though so that nothing comes loose when they start gumming them. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 2:59 PMLion Brand Yarn website has free patterns for small things to knit, if you have extra yarn. I think mittlens and hats are quick. Knitted tree ornaments decorated with buttons and ribbons? Fabric stuffed tree ornaments? Little drawstring cosmetic bags? Those can be knitted too.

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 10:24 PMoh, another thing i did one year... i just bought cheap tshirts (like white ones in the dollar bin) and fake silkscreened (using a friends setup) a logo on it (our family logo).. that was cheap.. but for fun, i bought some red flannel and cheap ribbon and made a drawstring bag to put each of them in as a giftwrap... so, everyone was completely intrigued to know what was inside the bag AND they got a nifty drawstring bag. even the teen guys liked that bag.again, lots of time to make the bags and tshirts, but essentially cheap for me. like $2 per gift.

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 3:41 PMWashcloths can be a quick knit. I usually get one and a half from a 50g ball of cotton yarn. You can pick coordinating colors, then choose different patterns, and voila individual gifts.
Combine a couple of cloths with some fancy pants soap (or get something that looks fancy but you really get it at Longs), and you're good to go. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 11:58 AMIkea (EEK!! I know I HATE Ikea) has sets of 4? cheap wooden picture frames for like a dollar. You could decorate them!! OR you could throw a mini decorating party and invite people you have to give presants for and let them decorate them themsleves. We did that once in college when everyone was broke. -
-
Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 11:20 AMwhy hate Ikea? A lot of the storage boxes for my crafts come from there and so did the simple frame for my clothes closet - it didn't cost much and was easy to get the cheapie plastic off of so I could recover it in an awesome retro fabric I found at a yard sale. It's behemoth, I know... but there are worse places! Plus their unfiished furniture is easy to paint or stain and they have mountains of vases for next to nothing - super easy decorating stuff that you can modify to match your style. I don't think I've bought anything there that still looks like it did at the store. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 4:01 PMI like their stuff just not the store, it gives me the heebie jeebies. I feel like such a sheeple when I go there. *shivers* -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 8:32 PMDo what we do - go through it "backward". But yeah - we get that feeling too, it's kinda hard not to, but it's easier to keep your head if you go with a bunch of friends.

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 12:07 PMWhat about reusable shopping bags, like the ones so many stores are selling right now (with their store logo on it of course). You could use a medium weight cotton duck cloth (available in many colors if you have a good fabric store) and some nylon strapping for the handles. It is a matter of sewing a long rectangle(front bottom and back of bag) to two smaller rectangles (the sides) and then adding the handles. I have considered recycling the thin plastic sides of cat litter containers to make bottoms for the bags to give them a little more support. Also using t-shirt transfer paper in my printer to make the bags more personal.
Just a thought. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 3:07 PMoh this is a fabulous idea! i've been debating and debating what i can make en masse for all my family, friends, etc, and this would be great. everyone can use a personalized grocery bag... perfect, thanks for the idea!
-
Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 3:51 PMMake sure the handles go all the way down, and support the bottom of the bag. You don't want heavy things to break through. -
-
Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 12:18 PMOf course, good reminder. I should have put that in there. You could also use the cotton strapping if you wanted it to be more "natural", but I think the cotton is more pricey.
A way to measure for the bottom of the bag is to find the biggest box of cereal you have and use it as a guide. Figure you might want to be able to put 2 or even 3 of those boxes in the bag and figure out what dimensions you would need to accommodate that. Me, I cheated and bought one of the bags from a local store and used it to make my pattern. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 1:01 PMor to summarize all the gift ideas:
make a grocery store tote out of ironed grocery bags with buttons as trim...

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Sun, December 9, 2007 - 9:11 PMOne very inexpensive thing you can do, that your family & friends will love, is to get an unfinished box of some kind (I like the ones shaped like a book that Michaels sells), paint it, and then fill it with paper hearts that you have written all the reasons why you love them. This really doesn't cost much at all, but means a whole lot. Here is an example of one I did for my folks for their 50th Anniversary, but I've also made them for friends. people.tribe.net/2d1f6df0-...8afffc31a6

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Mon, December 10, 2007 - 4:28 PMI have a HUGE yarn stash, and inspired by the japanese habit of putting a cute face on a lot of thngs - including poo - I have been making fun foods. Safety eyes, yarn, some imagination and I've made up several patterns for foods.
My next, when things slow down, is George Carlin's "Meat-cake".
I've even been selling them in my store - and they are good for any age!
I forgot to put a mouth on one of the items, and one of my co store owners (owns the ajoining store) said it looked creepy. So maybe a line of creepy food is next.
This could also be done with fabric - a Happy T bone steak, and waffle, etc, etc- all you'd need to buy is the safety eyes, and they have them at Hobby Lobby and likely other craft stores.
That would fulfil your gifting needs and give everyone something unique and unusual. -

Re: Inexpensive Gift Ideas?
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 8:38 AMHave you ever made plastic bag wreaths? If this place would just let me paste I could put a picture. Just tie cheap (without the zip-lock) plastic bags onto a coat hanger shaped into a wreath. Place them close together and it comes out fluffy. Then put a bow and/or stickers on. Cool -
