I'm learning what to do with the loom knitter things and doing plastic canvas stuff now, so I am constantly looking for balls of yarn at my thrift stores - and there are always sweaters available. Skirts are my favorite things to get great fabric from - especially the long and flowing ones where you don't have to work with the pleats and there is an abundance of flat fabric (except when there are tiers). Around here (SE Wisconsin) the thrift stores always have bags of fabric for cheap - like $3. I've gotten bags of fabric that I knew had almost $50 in fabric in them. You can't go wrong with that!
