I always thought this was more myth then truth but since I have been using a lot more Elmer's Glue I have started to see roaches? I did some research and found a couple of links but has anyone had this problem?
I took all of my glue(d) projects outside for now but I work late into the am hours and watch movies / TV shows as I work - something I can't or don’t feel comfortable doing on my patio (I live an an apt complex.)
Is there a different type of glue I can use?
Is there a way I can use the glue & keep them away?
Suggestions?

Re: Cockroaches & Elmer's Glue?
Fri, September 4, 2009 - 7:32 PMSierra, you say you live in an appartment complex, are there any new neighbors? The reason I ask is that I would look for more than the glue as the reason. Someone may have taken a vacation somewhere even, and brought them back in their luggage. Your glue may be "food" for them, but I would think that in a complex, they have many tastier options to go with. I don't know if roaches are common in your area (such as in the Southeastern part of the US), but around my area (WI) there are normally food or unclean reasons for them. I would let management/landlord know about the problem and make sure to keep your apartment clean - especially don't leave any food out.
Have you purchased or gotten any used furniture or electronics - like from a rummage sale or second hand store? I'm bringing up these other ideas because I tend to doubt that the glue alone could draw them - I can't imagine you having that much glue that it'd be a problem. Also, if you live in a complex, it's quite possible that management has a extermination company spraying the outside and common areas, so maybe they could checkout your appartment to see if they can find the source and take care of it. -

Re: Cockroaches & Elmer's Glue?
Sat, September 5, 2009 - 12:59 AMSome really good points… I have wondered about the neighbors… We don’t mingle but I always get a negative vibe from them. Just something off… I do live in a small complex and in Southern Cali. Roaches are unfortunately pretty common but for the most part preventable. I do keep all food kept under plastic lock and storage bins and sweep every day since I do crafts pretty much every day – lots of cuttings. Most of my art projects are for Halloween which requires glue (lots of paper crafts). That’s why I was wondering if that was it. Across from my complex is a duplicate complex but owned by someone else. She’s really good about the care of the building and I wouldn’t be surprised if she had an exterminator come by…driving them to our side… so that could be it.
Thank you for responding, I really appreciate it. -

Re: Cockroaches & Elmer's Glue?
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 3:14 PMput a talc power down like purchase a cheap brand of babypowder and lightly dust around the common wall that is share between apartment units and sprinkle window seals and around the floor where the cupboards are.
keep kitchen and sink areas dry generally takes about two months to see an improvement.
shake out anything that brought in from outdoors .
sometimes the roaches come in with newly bought supplies . -

Mon, October 5, 2009 - 9:49 AMBoric acid on all your thresholds and under shelf & drawer paper. Harmless to humans, pets, and deadly to roaches and ants. Cheap in the supermarket or hardware store, often in dollar stores. -

Mon, October 5, 2009 - 10:28 AMThat works! I did move most of my crafts to outside and plan to buy a pop up tent to cover them in the rainy season. But I used it on the floor between my neighbors apartment and mine and I did see a big improvement. :)

Re: Cockroaches & Elmer's Glue?
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 7:29 AMElmer's brand glue is made from milk casiens which are proteins you can consume and so can roaches.
But,I really think that there is no connection between insect pests and the glue. I mean you'd have to leave so much of it around that they'd be feeding on it to the exclusion of all the more accessible proteins and starches which tend to pack up in all the hidden corners of homes and furniture.
If you have roaches and you don't live in the south where they are native it is because some one brought them there.
This is a constant problem with apartment buildings and condominiums.
Turn your heat way down in the winter, use borax and something that no one ever thinks of is DEET.
It repels all insects including roaches and those god awful Japanese stink bugs.
You can get DEET in a variety of forms it's not terribly cheap but it lasts about 8 - 12 days before breaking down
Carcinogenicity:
Mice and rabbits exposed dermally to 0.02 mL of 10, 50 and 100% concentrations of DEET twice a week for 160 weeks had no significant differences in the number of tumors compared to controls.
Unless you are buying bulk from Vertellus Specialties Inc. ( the maker) you can't get any of those concentrations.
I tried once to make my own DEET treatment to prevent insects from entering my house. The stuff breaks down so easily it's useless as an additive to paint. But the compound in a powder or spray will persist for a week or two. So it's definitely useful.

Thu, November 12, 2009 - 11:51 AMthat's why boric acid is a better alternative. Cheap, safe.
