Re: costumes - hooves anyone?
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 11:41 PMA dance troupe I saw had a theme on horses once. They used platform boots (that had separate heels, not the space boot kind) with the heels cut off. I thought it was a clever way of eluding to hooves and still wearing shoes. But you'd basically be walking on the balls of your feet the whole time. -

Wed, February 6, 2008 - 2:38 PMSaw someone come to Golden Gate faire in a white unicorn outfit, they used this technique. Looked like that would be an exhausting leg workout, to me! She was wearing sandals by the end of the day. -

Re: costumes - hooves anyone?
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 3:01 PMif you got stripper boots with lucite heels the heels would'nt be very noticeable and you'd still have support. you can also consider walking on very small stilts/risers. it's easier to add a hoof shape around the narrow pole and the angle created by your foot on the riser platform mimics the back-bending knees of animals. -

Re: costumes - hooves anyone?
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 6:53 PMgood ideas! i'm really trying to work something out so that i don't have to kill my legs or fall off of stilts. on the site i found, they did a set of cloven hooves that appear to use a high heeled shoe. used lots of hair on the fetlocks to kind of disguise the heel part, & it looks great! i'm gonna have to think about this one for a while, & come up with a comfy yet attractive plan.
keep the ideas coming, & thanks again! >:} -

Re: costumes - hooves anyone?
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 8:04 PMFluevog made some fierce boots called the Grand National a while back that were hoof-shaped. I think the style is retired, or at least really hard to find, but maybe you can get some inspiration...

Re: costumes - hooves anyone?
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 9:56 PMTake a look at these, see if they give you ideas:
www.furrhappens.com/index.php
And scroll down here to Feet:

This image has some good text on ideas for hair around the hoof/foot:

More hooves:

A less than stellar comment on the furry ankles and platforms boots, but still looks hoof-like:

This looks easy:

Head down to your local crafts store and your local fabric store and see what they have. Check also the hardware store. Just walk up and down aisles to see what is there.
You might be able to use part of a plastic funnel.
Or how about those funnel collars meant for cats/dogs so they don't chew on themselves?
Or maybe part of the old fashioned rubber plunger.
You just don't know what you will find when you browse looking for anything. Ha! -

Sat, February 9, 2008 - 9:16 AMCheck out this real Clydesdale image:

Close up of another Clydesdale's front feet:
picasaweb.google.com/PamelaK...75953570
I think that would be easier to do. A larger hoof. Covered mostly in hair.
Depending on the size of your foot, you might be able to trim containers you already have or get at the store. Like margarine tubs. Cool whip tubs. These kinds of things (I'm big on links, it's easier for me to describe things in conjunction with images):
united-pack.en.alibaba.com/prod....html
Trim off the lip of the bowl. Most of the bottom would be cut out too. And part of the side. So you have a curving, flexible(!) plastic form. Holes could be punched to allow for lacing. Then...It can then be COVERED with vinyl or "leatherette" type stuff. Then small holes made in the material for lacing onto a shoe.
The shoe can simply be a comfortable pair of sneakers. If they still have plain, black (or whatever the color of your hoof will be) high top kinds, those would be great, so you can use the holes in the shoe lace area to also lace on the hoof portion. The plastic bowl hoof can further be stabilized via elastic that runs under the shoe.
There are hoof like boots, but I bet these would cost a lot:
www.youdontsay.org/Shoeboot/Shoes103.jpg
And if it's for ONE NIGHT, what is the point of spending that much, if you won't wear them again? The sneakers, on the other hand, could be worn afterwards, and would be comfortable for the parties that you attend.
P.S. Be sure to practice walking in anything you make, including STAIRS. And also, if you are going to be driving, you may want to be sure you can take them off to drive. The larger the hoof is, the more difficult it will be to climb stairs.
For fun, take a look at the shoes (that probably have broken necks) on this page:

Re: costumes - hooves anyone?
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 2:29 AMwow, so many great links & ideas! excellent! the fetish boots have a great split heel that i think would be easy to replicate & attach to the back of a platform boot or some type of high heel. & a couple of the other pics/links really made the mental picture i have clear up nicely. i just ordered some silky fleece in black for the legs, & i'm going to use either horse hair or synthetic hair for the feathering around the hooves. i have at least one pair of old heel boots that will likely be the base, or i'm going to hit up a consignment place to get something that relatively comfy that i can build on. great stuff everyone, my thanks to all! >:}

Re: costumes - hooves anyone?
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 5:25 PMI'd try making shoe covers with thin cardboard/grayboard and plaster. One thing though, go extremely light on the plaster. It can make the piece completely sturdy or make it just crumble. I went to an instructable for a Boba Fett helmet, but modified it using the same technique for a dome shaped valkyrie helm. Here's the site www.instructables.com/id/How-...helmet/, but it should link you to the dented helmet site as well. Good luck! -

Re: costumes - hooves anyone?
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 8:54 PMi found a great costume supply site : www.aradanicostumes.com/index.php
not only do they have wonderful items, they have articles & "how to's" that are quite helpful. lots of great pics of cons & ren faires. they had a satyr/faun hoof for purchase, so i'm going to see what that looks like; it glues to the front of a shoe.
found some great deals on hair on ebay for the fetlocks, so the researching continues! thanks to all the great ideas, or hoping for more to come! & happy valentine's day to all! >:}
