I was told I should "slack"? my art projects for long lasting protection and shine - finishing touch. Can someone reccommend a top finishing coat for paper projects?

A top coat of a matte or high gloss clear spray paint works really well. Krylon makes several kinds, is inexpensive and works well on most mediums.

Some folks use hairspray (it used to be made of laquer, not sure anymore though) but I never have any around.

I just use clear spray like Stephanie said. Buy the cheap stuff. And do 2 or 3 thin coats instead of one heavy coat. My can says non-yellowing fast-drying finish.

      :D

I'm a classically trained fine artist, and it depends what the medium is... pencil? you want a light fixative. pastel? watercolor? collage??

It totally depends. I think high gloss or shine can make it look junky personally. whats the medium?

      Agree.

Depending on the piece and how long you want it to last etc. there are quite a few products to use, everything from polyurethane (love it) to modge podge. For a good basic paper piece (collage) I generally use my collage glue. If its something I want to have forever, several coats of spray fixative (acid free) and framing/covering with glass or something is the way to go.
