cleaning a woven hat

I couldn't find this even in Heloise's book....I bought a fairly expensive hat which took some abuse last season. The label says 100% polyester, spot clean only. It looks like straw-cotton woven like a basket, with nylon threads holding it together. I don't want it to lose shape, or I'd have dunked it in soapy water and let it air dry. Any experience out there?
thanks!

I have a cowboy hat that has a (nylon - ?) liner band on the inside. I only wash the band. I use a fingernail brush & soap (usually my face wash since it sits on my face :) ) and let it air dry. Since the rest doesn't touch my skin I don't care about it so much.

    Does that make sense?

I wouldn't know how to wash the rest of it...

You make sense, but I want to clean the hat itself beacause it looks dirty. I guess the closest thing would be like a handbag...with which I'd hesitate less, cause the shaping wouldn't be an issue.

Im not sure if it exists but I know that there are frames that you can put a ball cap in and just toss it in the washer.

Have you considered calling a haberdashery? they might have some ideas on how to clean it.

You might even be able to have it dry cleaned...

Another place I would check is in a western outfitters store where they sell upscale felt and cane hats. They have a dust that they use to clean mine. they sprinkle the dust on and just brush it and it takes out marks and dirt easily.

        I hope this helps...

So I got impatient, and I decided, polyester is polyester, right? It's been around since the stone age seventies, and it ain't shrunk much since. I'm the one who put her pal's fake fur-and-lurex jacket in the front loader on delicate, and it worked out.
So I washed it in the sink, cool water, dove soap, just the brim first, and let it air dry. The next day, I did the crown. It feels snug, but I do have much more hair now than when I got it, and had basted in an inner hatband made from a discarded jeans waistband. May remove that if I don't shave my head again.
Anyway, the hat's clean, and the old rule works: soap, water, air and sunshine.
