Purely selfish reasons I have to admit, but I am learning to knit. I found a sweater pattern that I just HAD TO HAVE! LOL The pattern was only a buck so no biggie there. I grabbed the pattern and now I'm trying to learn to knit so I can make the sweater..... eventually. LOL I don't have access to an actual teacher. So if anyone has a recomendation for an awesome DVD or book for an absolute never knitted a stitch ever beginner, I am all into checking it out. I know someone here has a fabulous suggestion and I hope you are willing to share. I'm excited! Thanks for the help. ~Z

Welcome to the world of knitting. Go to knittinghelp.com , they have videos online, free patterns, and dvd's for sale. I think it's one of the best sites out there for knitting.

      Good Luck!

Wow Karen, thanks so much! Knittinghelp.com looks fabulous! I will definately have to check that out more and get to watching the videos. It looks like just what I was looking for. I didn't see where a needle size was recomended for beginners though. Any suggestions?

I think ravelry.com will be good to. I sent my email address for an invite. Thanks again for the recomendations. It's much appreciated!

If you're just practice knitting swatches and such, I would start at around 6 or 7. They're not too big that they're unwieldy and big enough you can see progress fairly quickly. And used a medium sized yarn to start. About the size of cooked spaghetti. Maybe cotton or acrylic.

          Good luck! :}

"I Can't Believe I'm Knitting!" is actually a really good pamphlet. You can probably find it at Michael's, Jo-Annes, etc. _Knitting School_ is also a good book. www.knitty.com has how-to-knit clips.

Also, look around for local knit groups. You'd be surprised how many little knitting groups there are, once you know how to look. Start your hunt with a local knitting guild, yarn shop, college, book shop, church, etc.

(Sorry, that's www.knitpicks.com has the videos. Knitty has great free patterns)

We're always getting 40% off Michael's coupons in our weekly coupon flyer or paper. And, if you sign up at Jo-Ann's, you'll get 40% off coupons about twice a month.

Oh, and your local library probably has quite a stash of knitting books to check out, or they may be able to get you a title through an interlibrary loan.

And, did I mention that the most important thing ever when learning to knit (got paper?) is to relax and have fun? Put on your favorite pair of comfy pjs, put on some guilty pleasure tv show, grab some hot chocolate, and curl up in your favorite spot. I'm so serious! A lot of knitters (like me) get all tensed up when trying to learn how to knit ("I must...get it...RIGHT!") and you'll just end up with sore hands and frustration. Pamper yourself. Enjoy every minute. Just go easy on the great glass of wine or new problems with ensue....

Thanks Amy! Tomorrow I'm getting on themailing lists for Michael's and Jo-Ann's. Every penny I can save means that much more I can buy. LOL

Will check into the library again too.

I am having fun! I crawled into my sweats in the recliner, threw on the silly sitcoms on tv, and grabbed the knitting needles. I already figured if it wasn't fun I wasn't going to do it. I want to learn but I want to have fun too. I figure it'll take me a little while to "get it" and I'm having fun trying! Comfort is a must for me. I killed myself when I had the space and equipment to do all the costume sewing I used to do. Now it's time to enjoy annd relax..... another reason why I chose knitting.

Another pocket style reference is Knitting for Dummies. I've been told that this is a great step by step for beginners. I'm too much of a "dummie" to learn from books and videos for knitting or crocheting myself - I've got a few books and just don't understand the language. I admire anyone who can do it. I'm thinking I'm going to have to look for a class - or someone really patient to teach me hands-on.

I never knew about knittinghelp.com, though. Maybe I can find success there. I should have known to post here for guidance - thanks, Zarina, for being smarter than me. ;-) Good luck on your new addiction.

I taught myself to knit off the internet (for free!). Try youtube for great videos on simple stitches, and of course your local library will have lots of books on knitting, for sure. Learning to knit is something you only really need to do once, so save your money for all the fancy yarn you're going to go into debt for....

So this week I'll be sitting at the computer (like that's anything new LOL) kneedles in hand and working on my knitting. I am SO excited to be learning this new craft and I can't wait to actually make something! Woo~hoo!

I'll post my progess and of course any more questions I have. Eventually I hope to have somethng finished and I'll share pics too!

Thanks so much for all the help. I am so lucky to have found this tribe!!!

Just a little update for everyone...

Thanks to all of your suggestions... I'm knitting! Slowly but definately making progress. I have found every suggestion made here very helpful. I'm enjoying my needles and am "getting it". I haven't found a knitting circle or group yet, but the dvds and books along with the online videos are doing just fine so far.

I have made my practice knitting into scarves (for lots of repetition) and donated them to the homeless. No one cared if something wasn't perfect either. Now I'm still making scarves, but I'm on to hats and mittens too. Also will be donated.

I can see myself making that sweater eventually now. I never thought I would be able to do it but with all of your help I can see it happening now! Thanks so much everyone!!! *big hugs*

friend of mine had a wrap on I fell in love with it.was knitted i n the homestyle yarn..I asked her where did she get it...with a laugh she said "For 25 dollars you can have one too." The next day we went to Jo-Anns and got 4 skiens of yarn and #10 round(is that what you call the cabled ones) she showed me how to start.and that was it. I called 3 months later and asked how to end it. the shwal goes from my shoulders to the floor.I never learned other stiches, but have had a ball making whatever the yarn wants to be. I carry it with me at all time, in lines .. family have toos it works.. enjoy
