I'm thinking a head to christmas and am having a tuff time figuring out what I'm going to do. I live in a 30ft 5th wheel trailer now so I need to think light weight. I have a 5ft tree that we want to decorate in a rustic, cabin/lodge style. Nothing fancy or childish. Just simple, earthy ornaments. I have been searching ebay and other places online and am having very little luck getting inspired. So who better to ask than all the crafty vixens here? What are your ideas for christmas ornaments that I can make? Come on..... inspire me!
Thanks! ~Z

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Fri, July 31, 2009 - 9:00 PMCinnamon Sticks bundled with a ribbon and a sprig of mistletoe
Clothes pin ornaments ~ People & Figures, Rustic Reindeer, Pine Trees; use acrylic paint and craft accessories.
Etched Glass Designs ~ Buy clear glass ornaments, etch creme, and a Dimensional Adhesive for Foil/Foil Leaf. Use the glue to make designs, let it dry, cover with etch creme, and then rinse. Every thing rinses off.
Hurricane Lamp Glass - for a soft snowy effect, use the etch creme again for decorating.
Good Ole Cranberry and Popcorn strings ~ its amazing what it does for a tree.
Glittered Pinecones
Acorns
Bread dough ornaments~ esp scented bread dough
Oranges with cloves stuck into them
Bunches of dried herbs and flowers
Simple felt creations ~ felt is very affordable and can be sewn into anything
Thats all I can think of right now!

Fri, July 31, 2009 - 11:31 PMI think just nice ribbon and white lights would be pretty nice. Plus, you could re-use the ribbon :)

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Sat, August 1, 2009 - 11:54 PMI'm not sure if it's rustic in style, but you could use pointsetta flowers (silk), bows, and cranberry & popcorn garland. That might be more of a country-ish style, but it is light and simple.
You could also put little birds in nests onto the branches, and maybe add something to look like snow under/around the nests (not a lot, just a hint) - but not the spray stuff. And hang some plain pinecones - our fake tree actually has pinecones attached to the branches and a "tree trunk" post complete with bark - people always ask us if it's real. Then add lights and a few ornaments and you're done - maybe some popcorn/craberry garland.
I've also seen little grapevine wreaths at craft stores that are a great size for ornament making - or just hanging as they are even. You don't need to add much more than a few little touches to decorate them.
That's all I can come up with right now. -

Sun, August 2, 2009 - 11:33 AMactually the little birds would look great in the mini grape vine wreaths.... -

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Mon, August 3, 2009 - 9:45 AMThanks everyone! *hugs* Great ideas here!
Here's a pic of the tree we bought... people.tribe.net/tribalama...562a1c04f6 just so you have an idea of what I'm working with.
I'm trying to stay away from glass or anything fragile. With the 5th wheel we do travel a lot so I like keeping the possibility of damages to a minimum.
I am planning to use plain clear/white mini lights, and I made a denim and burlap tree skirt for it. I also found a rustic/rusty metal star for the top. A couple of hand carved eagle ornaments and a couple of carved moose ornaments too.
I like the ideas of the cinnamon sticks bundled with a ribbon and mistletoe, cranberry and popcorn strings, pinecones and acorns, oranges with cloves, and the dried herbs and flowers though. Very nice ideas! Earthy and rustic and oh so easy to do. I also like the birds nests and grape vine. I can't believe I didn't think of them. I guess I've been into the commercial decorations for way to many years. LOL
I so appreciate all of your ideas! I'm inspired! -

Mon, August 3, 2009 - 3:57 PMZarina;
This tree does look very real. Would love to know where you got it. I'm due for a replacement - my tree is ancient (20 yrs, old). Some years I would keep it hidden away and put up a real one. -

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Mon, August 3, 2009 - 5:43 PMI found it on ebay first from a seller called TheChristmasTreeStore but it sold before I could get it. Then I found and bought it here www.lawnornamentsandfountains.com/ Hope that helps!

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Mon, August 3, 2009 - 7:53 PMFrom what I can see, that is my tree (well, just like mine)! It's exactly like it if it has pinecones on the branches. -
-
Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Mon, August 3, 2009 - 10:11 PMYep, it has pinecones on the branches too. Small world huh? LOL It's funny and cool that we have the same tree. -

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 9:46 AMif you have a lot of sun, you can buy solar powered Xmas lights. target sells them at Thanksgiving. They sell out F A S T ! ! ! -

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 1:21 PMI know, and they are pretty cool! Unfortunately they won't work for us. We're in a very wooded park so there isn't enough sunlight for them. I have a heck of a time getting flowers to grow in a barrel outside, so I know the lights wouldn't work inside. I have to use the plain old electric ones for now. But I have my eye on them for in the future!
So, lots of great suggestions here that I definately appreciate! Any more???

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 11:26 AMHere's a thought to tie in the burlap from your tree skirt. You could make some gingerbread men/women out of burlap and yarn - use the yarn to sew the pieces together and decorate where icing would go (& stuff them with cotton or polyfill). I've seen these at craft fairs and they turn out really cute. Also, you could get different colors of burlap (if you wanted, or just use the yarn) to make little Christmas trees, stars, holly leaves and berries, and so on for some rustic looking traditional ornaments. The ornaments would certainly be sturdy and light at the same time - and would look great with some of the other ideas - especially the cranberry/popcorn garland (my favorite).
I could totally imagine a tree decorated with these in a log cabin back in the "old days". Then again, I live in Wisconsin and used to wish I could be Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House on the Prairie) when I was a young girl. Whatever you do, you'll definitely have to post pictures! -

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 12:00 PMI absolutely will post pics when I get the tree up. I'm sure it will take me a couple of years to get all the decorations just the way I want, but I'll post pics as I progress.

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 6:39 AMbuy some copper flashing and use tin snips to cut them into shapes, then punch small decorative holes through them with a nail, or draw on the back with a stylus
small bags of cheese cloth filled with mulling spiced and tied with ribbon- smells good and its pretty
get somebody to cut a 2 inch thick branch into slices, drill a hole in the top of each and woodburn designs onto them.
find some really beautiful leaves this fall and dry them out, then coat with polyurethane and attach a loop to hang them, or polyurethane them to slices of a branch -

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 9:08 PMI know but damn it, I live in a state without a Hobby Lobby!!! I was so mad when I found that out. the closest one to me is 639 miles away in Logan, UT. Grrrrr!!! They don't have stores in WA, OR, ID, CA or NV.
There are places here that sell the tool, but I am wondering about instructions??? The tools here don't come with any. -

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 9:33 PMits essentially like using a sharpie, you dont want to press down too hard or it will look weird (like with a sharpie's ink bleeding) you just draw with the tip that is appropriate for the type if line you want.. pointes tip for thin lines, round tip for dots or thicker lines, pie-cutter shaped tip for shading or v shaped marks. it's more something you need to experiment with, rather than can just read how to do it. make sure you have a non-meltable surface to work on, and watch your fingers!
those things are worse than a glue gun, by far. be careful.
they sell them at benjamin franklin, ac moore, and sometimes at jo-ann fabrics. some local hardware stores have them too -

Thu, November 19, 2009 - 2:05 PMI just wanted to move this thread up for anyone who may be starting - or working on their Christmas stuff now.
Gypsy-Wolf, how is it coming for you. Don't forget to let us all know how it turns out. -

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Thu, November 19, 2009 - 3:51 PMI have some ideas and am starting to work on them. Some won't be done until next year though because of time. I will be sure to post pics when I get things done.
I did a lot of looking around this year and all the stores have stuff way too glitzy-glam for us or they are way too big. Living in an rv we only have a small tree. About 5ft tall and 32in across. We can't use the bigger ornaments. And I can't find anything that I would like for our cabiny style. So I'm making ornaments! Pix to come later.
Of course I'm always looking for new ideas and inspiration from this wonderful tribe!

Re: Jumping into Christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please!
Fri, November 20, 2009 - 11:22 AMGingerbread cookies. Add a little extra flour and they hold their shape really well during cooking, well enough that you can poke a hole in the top to put a ribbon through to hang them on the tree.
