Hey my Peeps!
Lately I have been on a copper Jewelry kick. Just mainly using up a huge amount of copper I had acquired some time ago. I love the look of copper and natural stones, mixed in maybe with some gold fill or silver - you can see pictures of the stuff I've been making in the photos in my profile.
Anyhow, I have heard people mention that copper tends to wear off on the skin, more so if the skin is very acidic (likewise, the Gold-fill that touches the skin regularly will wear off much faster). I found a a polymer resin blend in a solvent base which keeps the copper looking like it is freshly polished, and prevents the metals from oxidizing on the skin. I was told it is totally green, and you can even coat copper cookware and eat from it once dry.
My question to you guys - do you like natural copper jewelry? If so, if you found a piece and was told it covered it with a coating, would that deter you from purchasing it, or would you like that it would not rub off on you? I've heard many a person say they love the color of copper, so I wanted to explore whether it would be a wise decision to coat my pieces prior to selling them. :) I should be able to apply it by just wiping it onto the copper, so I don't believe it would be that noticeable over the piece. Of course, I'll have to test it out first. But I know a lot of people love natural jewelry (like me ;), and have heard a wee bit about the natural benefits of wearing copper, so I wanted to get more opinions as to whether the benefits would be negated by the application of a resin blend on metals. You have to wear nitrile gloves to apply it (I guess because the solvents) but it turns into something totally non-toxic and acts as great protection for the pieces?
Just checkin,' :D

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 12:06 PMoh, so far the craft wired spiral necklaces I've made have not worn off on me when I've worn them around for the day. I can yet tell if the chainmail copper I add will, it's totally raw and looks hardcore coppery...but thus far, I've coated nothing and been alright. How much does it wear off usually? -

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 12:23 PMI have a copper bracelet that I just love, but within a few hours of putting it on, I'd get a dark mark on my skin from it...that wouldn't wash off, it would take another day or two for it to wear off. I coated the inside of the bracelet with a product made for coating jewelry although it looked and smelled just like clear nail polish to me.

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 2:41 PMI cant wear MOST metal jewelry. Sterling silver, platinum, pewter and for whatever reason (cause my Burning Man necklace is made from it) saudering iron are the only ones so far that my skin WONt freak out on. I would love to try some other peices but always fear that i will get that rash. let us know how it comes out!

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 6:20 PMI love the look of polished copper & I hate the green/black marks copper leaves on my skin, so I usually wear rose gold (but expensive!)
Am Very interested to hear how the coating works out for you- knowing something copper was coated would make me more likely to buy it -not less.

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 8:32 AMI prefer my copper to be 'uncoated' but then again not everyone's body chemistry mixes well with copper, luckily I don't get green or dark marks unless it's an uberhot day and I'm sweating alot. If I did I'd probably want a coating so I could have the best of both worlds: gorgeous copper and minimal dark bands on my skin.
My doctor once commented on my copper bracelet. He said that nowadays there is a patch for everything, so why not wear copper jewelry for health? My wrists are prone to ganglion cysts so whenever I have achey days I find that wearing copper for a few days really helps.
When I want to bring my copper's luster back to life I give it a bath in lemon juice for 10 minutes or so. This wouldn't work if you have any stones or beads mixed there, but for just copper it works fine. -

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 10:26 AMinteresting! I wonder how lemon juice might affect natural stones on it...I might have to do a sample test. Yes, I am in the process of starting a website - and then I thought maybe I could offer the coating as optional addition for the pieces. If i do shows, it would have to probably all just come coated so that i could try and maximize what I got out there to sell. This has all given me much to think of - thanks for the input. I look forward to having my site up later on this summer :) This whole thing is still all new to me :) -

a lot of craft wire --even the plain not colored copper are coated with a thin plastic thats why/how the wire stays nice a fresh polished copper looking
I forgot which brand, but it surprised me to find it coated when I was pounding on it and this thin shell came off
as far as coating
I say go for it, turns me green

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Mon, June 23, 2008 - 5:26 PMI think lemon juice is actually a test for limestone, it will 'sizzle' when dribbled on the rock. Think 'acid rain' eating away beautiful buildings over time. So any soft stone and acid should not be mixed for any length of time. But the acid in lemon juice seems clean up the tarnish on copper. Anything with acid could work, like tomato juice or any number of house hold items. -

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Mon, June 23, 2008 - 6:27 PMcopper is also a remedy for arthritis, before I got mine under control with better exercise, I wore a copper anklet for years. It would usually tarnish to brown, and depending on where I went swimming, it would shine once in a while.I have copper rings which turn my fingers green a bit, but it doesn't bother me as it might bother others. I would never have bothered to buy copper jewelry if it was coated. -

Re: Copper Jewelry with a Topical Coating?
Mon, June 30, 2008 - 3:45 PMwhat is the coating - I'd be more likely to buy with coating - so I don't turn green - I get a blue/green stain on my skin under the jewelry if I wear it too long. I do love copper though - just love the color.
