Any idea how I might do this? I have a swatch set that I got from the yarn company and I want to find a way to digitize it into a form so that customers can see what colors I can make my costume tails with. Its a bit problematic since my yarn has many shades woven into the skien and would variate the color. Yes, it makes my tails not look so flat, but it also creates problems in figuring out how to show the colors in the best way.
I have a scanner and a digital camera. Seems that the scanner eats the yarn hues by washing them out, especially with lighter colors. I want to make sure that I dont cheat my customers regarding the colors available. Someone suggested a colorimeter but I dont know if any of that software will work well on a Linux machine.

Re: Digitizing Swatches - Color Integrity
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 4:00 PMScan them directly to your photo editing software. The property you want to change is "saturation". You'll probably have to change brightness and contrast too. But know that everyone's monitor will show your swatches as a slightly different color. That's why there's that little caveat on product pages for online stores. If your customer is looking for a general color they'll be fine but if they are looking to match something you're going to have problems. If you scan and then print out a postcard with your color swatches it'll give your something to show them. Just an idea. -

Mon, July 20, 2009 - 4:53 PMYeh. So far, the closest I got is taking the swatch cards and laying them on the sunny area of the deck and snapping large size digital camera shots. I think it is the closest Im going to get. I doubt I can do any better than any other site that has to place the disclaimer about the colors not being exact. -

Mon, July 20, 2009 - 5:28 PMProduct shots are best taken in indirect light before 10 am. Try photographing them out of the sun. Place them on the floor and stand directly over them. Best of luck. -

Tue, July 28, 2009 - 8:49 AMIntegrity of color also depends on the screen and viewing app. I've view photos in one app that seemed way darker than in others, and ended up color correcting too light.
