Anyone? I've tried a long time ago to make my own paper beads, but only used mod podge to seal them. It worked in that they were sealed, but it didn't harden them in any way so they were still very fragile and couldn't hold up like say, a wooden bead.

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 11:09 PMI've been thinking about this for a couple days.. I don't know how you could do it any different than what you already tried unless!! you tried resin.. the kind that you use to make new table tops.. my daughter did one using china plates. She broke the china and layed it out in patterns and then filled it in with resin and smoothed in the spots to dry.. I've also seen it used in mosaic flooring..so there is some play in it.. but hardens really hard. But your tryng to make it clear so you can see the crinkle of the paper right? -

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Thu, January 1, 2009 - 12:14 AMyeah, trying to make it clear. Found some videos on youtube. They recommended a polyeurethane varnish. I got a fast drying spray and will spray them in the morning, as it's taken me a bit to get like 30 beads done from the first stages. -

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 5:31 PMI ended up using a polyeurethane (sp?) spray varnish. Did two coats and they came out great. If I can find my cord to the camera I'll post pictures.

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Thu, January 29, 2009 - 3:55 PMthose are really great Randi, you should get a wall paper book one of the mural ones so your beads all come from the same image...or is that what your doing already? -

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 7:50 PMI've just been using magazines, so no, none ever come out the same. I've not tried to use wallpaper but I don't know if it might be too thick. dunno though.. -

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 8:35 PMat least it would be self glueing.
But the vinyl doesn't stick to itself very well
so you would have to get a tube of
vinyl to vinyl glue. That should work.
You can get a small tube usaually at
your local paint & wall paper store.
sounds good.
You could ask for expired pattern books
and do something with those I bet.

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 7:22 AMnew to posting but have been lurking and enjoying this tribe for a long while. We used to make them with left over church bulletins so that the color patterns could be repeated. Usually there are some to many left over after a service and they can't be reused, and they tend to have colorful fronts. You just have to know someone who goes to church or go yourself. I think we sprayed ours with spray varnish/polyurathane, but it's been along time since i made them. They key is wrapping them tightly when you make them, that makes them very stiff once the glue dries. And we did them around round toothpicks or heavy wire, not straws. You could probably use coffee stirrers if you wanted to leave a slightly larger hole and just cut them flush rather than sliding them off.

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 10:09 PMI wonder about water color washes
on any kind of paper you want. Any thickness
you prefer. if you're going to seal it any way
it wouldn't run and you could make
whatever colors you wanted . -

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 9:21 AMThat would probably be gorgeous and would provide an easy way to have it all match and get really saturated colors. You could also use thinned down acrylics, which are waterproof once dry. I use them as a substitute for watercolors when i need the look of wc but need it to be waterproof.

Re: Making your own paper beads: what kind of varnish to use?
Tue, February 10, 2009 - 6:20 AMSpray acrylic or even clear nail polish for smaller, tight beads works! I love getting rid of all my junk mail this way.
Have you tried making beads from recycled newspaper? Instead of rolling, you are basically creating a pulp which you then paint. Here's a how to, if you are interested. www.favecrafts.com/Green-Cr...per-Beads
