I've sprinkled rock salt over dyed silk and it made some pretty cool crystalized patterns on the fabric. I think it needed a sealling treatment after that as the design softened a bit when I washed the material. - the link to the dye guru looks very informative.

I've used both iodized and plain salt without iodine. I have not noticed any difference.

The most awesome place to ask dyeing questions is undoubtedly pburch.net. Paula Burch is a chemist and a dye guru. Another cool forum (a list, really,) is The Dyer's List. Paula has a link to this on her site, or you could Google it. I remember that for fiber-reactive dyes (MX-type), according to Doug Wilson on The Dyer's List, the answer is "no," it doesn't make any difference whatsoever.

I have no idea, but you can buy non-iodized salt in the supermarket. Also sea salt in the 1 pound container.

I was wondering if the iodine added to salt has an effect on the dying process (assuming one is using iodized salt!)

Thank you for sharing you
