hiya! i have some lovely feathers that came off my chickens. i've heard that they need special handling/cleaning to rid them of microbes and to preserve them. any ideas how to best accomplish that? thanks ladies.

put them in the freezer for a couple of days. Then place in a knee high stocking and vacuum well.

I fill up the sink with water and dish soap. Sprinkle the feathers on top then gently dunk the feathers with my hands, fingers spread. Then I let soak for about half an hour. Drain sink, refill w/ fresh water, repeat dunking & soaking. Remove feathers and if necessary, reshape. Lay out on a towel until dry.

That's how I clean my feathers, plucked from dead birds. Sometimes there's some "meat" attached. I've never had any bugs, mites or rotting problems using this method.
