I have got a whole lot of old make up
I canmt give it away, and Ive spent so much money on it I hate to just trash it
any ideas on what to do with it?
like, I know I can use the eye shadow to "paint" and tint polynmer clay before its baked--especially the ones that are shiney
but what about lipsticks?
I was thinking about rubber stamping with lipstick, but how would I cure it?

I melt down old lipsticks to create new ones, I figure the melting process kills any bacteria. -

Mon, December 31, 2007 - 9:55 AMI make lip gloss out of old lipsticks. Just like Sooz, I use a little bowl in a pan of hot water to melt the lipstick and whatever lipids for the gloss. I usually use vaseline with a little bit of beeswax. I've found the beeswax keeps the gloss from being too soft.

Fri, November 30, 2007 - 10:37 PMLipstick lasts a *really* long time. Unless its turning colors its probably ok if you want to keep using it or give it away. Just wipe it down and it should be sweet. Eye stuff, not so much. 3 years max on shadows and I think 1 or 2 on mascara.
As for the arts n crafts side, I think the sky's the limit. Its just paint, after all. :D I like the idea of clear coating afterwards to make it stick. -

Sun, December 2, 2007 - 8:10 AMSome of that stuff will dye your clothes--we've used it as art stuff on garments after my fellow thespians and I in a show realized exactly how much it was staining our before-show clothes. Kind of fun--it changes colour, and fades after a long while, but it's neat to do once in a blue moon.... -

Tue, December 4, 2007 - 9:30 AMWith lipstick if you give it a quick spritz with rubbing alcohol and then wipe the outside with a tissue your good to go as far as bacteria and yucky stuff. Mascara I think really only lasts a year. Good Luck! -

Wed, December 5, 2007 - 7:02 AMI heard every 6--but my mascara doesnt last that long--it always gets all goopy and blech after about 6 weeks
and since I only wear it 3x a week tops......
I will go thru the lipsticks and clean off the ones I want to keep, and Ill try "oil painting"

Wed, December 5, 2007 - 7:53 AMIs any of it Mac? Mac will take back old makeup. I've returned old lipsticks I never really used and swapped for new ones. They also 'recycle' their old containers... I think 5 of them will get you a free something. -

Use them to stencil cards for Xmass then spray with aqua net, several light to medium coats..
place tissue paper on top to protect it in the envelope.
Use them to add color to a charcoal or pencil drawing, a look of vintage photos, any black and white print image as long as the medium it was printed on had a tooth, Glossy wouldn't work..
um...
crush small portions of it and apply it to the skin, chest, neck arm in shapes, swirls symbols... pad it well, take caution that clothing not rub..
you could do a design on your legs, or cheek...
Mascara never more then six month...
prevent the "goupies" buy taking a paper towel *(having little to no lint to worry about getting on the brush/applicator)* the first few times you use it roll the tip on a fresh paper towel and remove the access you cant scrap that off in the tube, just doesn't work well and gets sticky as it builds up. its exposed to the air more..
if you can don't scrap it , do it as little as possible...
wipe it gently, roll it, or slightly pinch it on paper towel..
It will go on neater and less globs on eye lashes..
Tissue or toilet paper put fuzz/lint on the applicator will get in your eye and drive you NUTS... don't do it... warned ya...
Lip sticks use them as oil sticks and draw with them, heavy weight reaves paper, may want to coat the paper with a coat of gesso..
use them in the Xmass cards and set the lip stick with eye shadows.. combine the two in your design..
Brush the lipstick in from the edges of stencil, dust with eye shadow from inside of design outward.. or?

Calvaleigh: - Do you know of a good way to "fix" makeup to clothes - besides the usual waterproof hairspray? (Funny question for theater folk, since you're always trying *not* to transfer makeup to your costumes ;^)
Soooz: - Do you use a microwave to melt down your lipsticks?
I *love* saving and re-using the brushes and containers from old liquid eyeliner - they make very precise applicators. (They all get old on me, too - since I probably wear eyeliner 4 or 5 times a year!) -

Fri, December 7, 2007 - 8:23 PMIt's been a while, I may have, a few seconds at a time, lipstick responds a lot like butter to nuking. I believe I used a double boiler - a small oven-proof custard cup in a pan of water.
