Hi Vixens. I am in need of some advice if there is anyone out there that can help me out. I'm recently confined to a wheelchair due to some SNAFU from back surgery in June. Due to reasons unexplainable (all tests showing normal) so far, I'm unable to use my legs or walk. I have a great sewing machine that I can't use because I can't press the foot pedal with my feet as I have extremely limited movement in my legs and even less control of that movement.
What I need to know is if anyone has any advice on how to control the foot pedal in an alternate way. I miss sewing, and have adapted many of the other crafting that I do so that I can do it from my wheelchair. I should probably mention that I don't have a sewing table and just use the kitchen table.
I hope I'm not offending anyone by asking my question. I don't know if the preferred term is physically challenged or physically handicapped as I'm really new to the situation. I truly appreciate any help I can get. It's been very hard to resume any of my normal activities as it's been a real struggle trying to figure out how to do things that I didn't even think about when I did them using my legs.

Re: Is there anyone physically challenged in the tribe that can give me some advice?
Fri, September 26, 2008 - 11:11 PMhi, was chair bound for 3 years. what worked for me was to put the foot pedal in my chair and and I learned how to roll/lean on it with my body wieght.if this makes sense..I had to sew up some rags before I got where I could be steady..but it worked. if limited in hip movement you can also put pedal in small of back it really doesnt take much pressure to work....same as putting on table on side and use arm pressure. the chore for me was dressing my chair as a rock so that I could go out as a rolling stone...there is a way to do all things you just have to try coloring out side of the lines sometime to make it work for you. -

Re: Is there anyone physically challenged in the tribe that can give me some advice?
Sun, November 2, 2008 - 2:24 PMHey! I wonder if you figured this out yet?? I would mount the foot pedal on the table leg with a hook so you could remove it easily. If you are able you could use our knee , or attach a 1 X3 inch board with a" c "clamp to yor chair attach the foot pedal and use you shoulder. I also have some disabilities and making things work is kind of fun. OHM
