Tattered Lace

Hello Lovelies. I've been commissioned to make a gothic harlequin type outfit for someone and she would really like me to use some old lace she has. It's very beautiful, tattered goodness, but it's very fragile at this point. I'm afraid it will just keep coming undone. Is there any kind of fabric fixative or clever trick I can use to make it a little sturdier? Thanks!

you could try fusing it to something really sheer & nude colored

I think this i a really good idea - fuse it to some netting or *something* to give it some support. Fray check alone won't give it any durability. She'd wear it once and it could totally fall apart. Needs some integrity behind it...

        Aloha!

there is also some stuff (found at craft stores like Michaels) that makes fabric stiff - if you want it to have more body or shape it a certain way.

btw- I would at least try fraycheck... I use it for lots of stuff. find it with the sewing notions.

Fraycheck will keep an edge from fraying further. Application is something like using nail polish on a run. I used it on a fairy wedding dress once because the bride didn't want any hemming, not even a rolled hem. Whether you use fraycheck or fusing, make sure you get the kind that is cleanable in the same way the garment will be washed or cleaned. I suggested fusing in the earlier post because it sounded like the entire piece of lace needed stability. Vintage fabrics deteriorate & if that's the problem, then you're going to have to fuse it or constantly be fraychecking the newly deteriorating areas
