Just curious:
Is it safe to work (cold) with silver and gold and copper, etc. while pregnant? Is it just a no soldering/casting thing, or should one stay away from working with metals all together?
A recent discussion led me to wonder and google is not turning up specific answers yet, so i thought i'd ask you ladies for input :D

Re: making jewelry while pregnant?
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:07 AMI've never heard it was unsafe to wear them while pregnant. Gold especially is a pretty inert substance. I can't see what harm could come, especially if you are not using other chemicals or fire. -

Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:10 AMyeah, i was just wondering because when i make jewelry i often notice a metal residue on my hands-particularly with stainless steel and silver wires. but i notice with gold and copper too. wearing it is fine, but i wondered if forming wire jewelry would be a bit too much?

Re: making jewelry while pregnant?
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 9:51 AMi was pregnant with my middle child and taking painting and jewelry classes with no problems. And doing it at home also. I even made sure with my ob first. We have a lot of chemical plants down here in here in Louisiana and many of her patients work there with no problems. Use the typical precautions and you should do fine. If you are worried about the residue on your hands you could try latex/non latex "surgical" gloves.
I'd say the only thing you have to worry about is the baby becoming hooked on jewelry making and taking over all your supplies! lol -

Re: making jewelry while pregnant?
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 6:45 PMI have the same exact question!!!! I've been making pieces on and off for years, but in the last couple of years, I have increased my productivity. I recently found out that I am pregnant with our 3rd child, and of course, I am concerned! This may sound dumb, but what about lead crystal products? Are these safe to work with? Help! I have a GORGEOUS new shipment of beads that I'm dying to get my hands on! Also, I purchased a bunch of colored glass pearls from fire-mountain gems and noticed the odor to be quite strong. Could these be dangerous as well? I am just a bit confused at the moment! Thanks!!!! -

Re: making jewelry while pregnant?
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 6:29 PMif it has a strong odor, id stay away from it, also your sense of smell may have heightened with the pregnancy
silver and gold are supposed to be inert metals you just dont want to ingest them
Im curious are the metals leaving more residue than normal now that you are pregnant?
your skin chemistry could make that ever so slight change to making it react more to the metals
I stopped doing crafts while preggo, couldnt stand the smells
