Bubble magnets

I recently saw a bubble magnet on a fridge, and was wondering how to make them with photos inside....so that a tiny photo (about 1 inch) can be magnified? Where might I find buble magnet supplies in a brick and morter shop or online (that ships to Canada)? Any tips on making these cute and whimsical gifts?

after buying the glass pieces from many different venues - I have found that the best ones are from the Dollar Tree store - they seem to have the clearest glass ones at the best price...
and, also, after much experimenting - get round ceramic craft magnets - they range in size from 1/2 inch to 1 inch - I normally use the 3/4 inch
    and
I have found that E6000 glue is the only way to go
first glue the image to the glass bubble (oh yea, they're called flat backed marbles usually), wait about an hour then glue the magnet to those
I have made thousands & they sell really well, people love them as gifts & the ceramic craft magnets are super strong (i.e. they can hold more than one piece of paper to the fridge)
if you have any trouble finding any of these items, message me & I'll send you some links

well - it varies on the customer...
        i start at 1.00 each and 4 for $3.00
but I've had a couple customers that bought over 20 & I charged them 50 cents each...to cover costs
and I do a lot of bartering with them, since they're small ticket items
if you decopage an altoid tin (or similar) and put some in there they make great gifts....
I find my graphics everywhere from magazines to books from the library

    cgi.ebay.com/MAGNETS-ROU...cmdZViewItem

he seems to always have them in stock & it's the best deal I've found
he also has lots of other great deals on crafty stuff

Tiffany, thanks a lot for posting this. The prices are pretty good for a lot of the items. I added this to my craft supplies favorites folder.

Wheres the best online place (or store in Toronto) to get the glass/plastic flat-backed marbles?

        Thanks a million,
        Petra :)

I tried getting them from several different places - online, super stores, craft stores, etc.
but now I get them from any "dollar store"
just make sure they are clear and are not iridescent

Are there any specefic glass gem brands that are free from air bubbles(or online shops that carry the best kind to use)? I have to buy these online as after much searching, I cannot find them easily enough in my city.

Ok, I found a great supplier for plastic cabochons on Etsy.com .... Now Im wondering about using my new HP Photosmart printer/scanner thingy to print custom images for these marble magnets. Do I need to use a special paper so the ink won't bleed when I apply glue to the image or photo?

Also, Will "Diamond Glaze" glue work best for tiny rare earth magnets, and gluing a printed image to a metal tin lid? Or should I try to find E6000?

              Thank you :)

I'm not sure about the Diamond Glaze glue - as I've never used it. E6000 is pretty readily available & I can get over 800 magnets per tube (at least).
I use either card stock or photo stock paper - neither one seem to bleed through - but I'm also not sure how the glue will react to the plastic cabochans, since I only use glass

When you say plastic cabochons, do you mean something manufactured and uniformly shaped/sized, as opposed to the glass bubbles which are somewhat irregular? I'd love to know who sells them!

I bought mine from TheCraftyDragonfly.etsy.com Fantastic service, fast delivery, everything arrived beautifully packaged too...That was my first Etsy purchase and i was very satisfied with the whole experiance. The plastic seems to magnify more than the glass marbles and the plastic is consistantly clear and perfectly shaped.

Another source for cabs is Tap Plastics but they are more expensive, I think.

What is the best free downloadable picture-editing software (that is user friendly)?

                    Thank you :)

If you right click on almost any thing and save it to your pictures as a jpeg image file you can manipulate it. www.lunapic.com/editor/

Thank you...i'm finding it tricky to resize images for 3/4 and 1-inch cabochons using the Gimp program. The acrylic cabs magnify the image more than the glass gems do. Is there a standard size or resolution that the pics should be printed at?

I also tried a sealant -Krylon's Preserve it-Digital Photo and Paper Protectant in the matte finish. I sprayed it on cardstock and it gives the image a more textured feel. It's REALLY important to do a thin coat. In what will be henceforth known as "The Great Marble Magnet Incident", I ruined my first batch of pix that took hours to get "just right", by spraying a second coat of sealant, and when the images dried, it looked like I put white spraypaint over them...I was crushed! I also sprayed the sealant on the reverse side of images I want to glue to a metal tin. Hopefully "Diamond Glaze" glue will adhere well without bleeding the ink, as I haven't got any elmer's on hand, and I dont think glue sticks would work on metel.

After several hours of drying time, time to glue the images to the cabs, wish me luck!....I do realize this is supposed to be the simplest of craft projects, but trust me to make a mess of it lol

BTW, Krylon now makes "magnetic paint" , maybe I'll create an entire wall dedicated to my marble magnet obsession...Yay!

Ohhhhh. magnetic paper sounds neat! Please let us know how it goes when you do make a fridge magnet and how strong they are. I'm using "Rare Earth" Neodymium magnets and even thogh they are itty bitty in size, they are unbelieveably powerful!

In my experience the magnetic paper isn't very good
they're like those magnets that carry out places give you to stick on your fridge & they lose their stickability quickly
plus, they don't hold up papers very well
