I've made several dresses that I just love wearing b/c they're so loose and comfortable, and such a breeze to make. But, they're also a bit baggy (or "poofy" as my husband says) so I'd like to add some shaping to them w/o having to muck around with darts and ties, etc. Since the dresses have kimono sleeves, I was thinking something like an obi would blend in, while adding temporary shaping for wearing to the office. Only thing--I have no idea how to make an obi and have never actually seen an obi that wasn't already all tied up. I hunted around a bit online and found some instructions, but they all seem to assume I have some basic knowledge of what it already looks like (e.g. "decide how long to make the front, the back ties, the front ties..." huh?). Do any of you have any suggestions or explanations for an obi, or some similar form of wide belt that ties in front (I hate sitting against a knot all day). Thanks!

Hey my Peeps!

Lately I have been on a copper Jewelry kick. Just mainly using up a huge amount of copper I had acquired some time ago. I love the look of copper and natural stones, mixed in maybe with some gold fill or silver - you can see pictures of the stuff I've been making in the photos in my profile.

Anyhow, I have heard people mention that copper tends to wear off on the skin, more so if the skin is very acidic (likewise, the Gold-fill that touches the skin regularly will wear off much faster). I found a a polymer resin blend in a solvent base which keeps the copper looking like it is freshly polished, and prevents the metals from oxidizing on the skin. I was told it is totally green, and you can even coat copper cookware and eat from it once dry.

My question to you guys - do you like natural copper jewelry? If so, if you found a piece and was told it covered it with a coating, would that deter you from purchasing it, or would you like that it would not rub off on you? I've heard many a person say they love the color of copper, so I wanted to explore whether it would be a wise decision to coat my pieces prior to selling them. :) I should be able to apply it by just wiping it onto the copper, so I don't believe it would be that noticeable over the piece. Of course, I'll have to test it out first. But I know a lot of people love natural jewelry (like me ;), and have heard a wee bit about the natural benefits of wearing copper, so I wanted to get more opinions as to whether the benefits would be negated by the application of a resin blend on metals. You have to wear nitrile gloves to apply it (I guess because the solvents) but it turns into something totally non-toxic and acts as great protection for the pieces?

Just checkin,' :D
So at my work we have to do lots of mailings for events and lots of times we send gifts to the attendees. The gift we are sending this week are leather passport holders with these black semi see through plastic inserts. My job yesterday was to remove these plastic inserts and throw them away. Well there are about 600 of them and I thought they looked too useful to be just thrown away.

So whilst in the shower last night (thats where I have all of my good ideas) I thought of how I could use them!!!! I want to make gifts for the Burn!! I want to stencile a design on one side and a "free hug" coupon on the other!!! YAY!!! But heres the problem, I dont know what kind og paint would work best. Acrylic? Spray paint? Those were my two best guesses. The plastic has a light texture (think like an eggshell) and is very flexible. What kind of paint could I use that wont chip, peel, or flake off?

Suggestions?

so this weekend i have my first craft fair. thankfully its a dinky one.
i have shared a table at a craft fair before, but only made about $30 due to inclement weather and poor table placement (they put me and my jewelry under a big, pollen shedding tree- no sun got under to make stuff sparkle)
so, saturday i have one all by myself. i have a whole 8 foot table, when previously i've used a 3x3 card table. this HUGE expanse of space makes me nervous.
i have earrings display racks, bracelet displays, and a bulletin board for hanging necklaces (i couldnt find any neck forms). i've got things to cover with fabric to stand things on, and business cards galore. i have 2 lights that i'll set up if there isnt enough, and i have bags and tissue paper for wrapping purchases.

now my question is this: the table is 8 feet, i did my practice on my 5 foot kitchen table. assuming i'll have some room to spread out a little.. i am thinking of setting up a "creation station" at one end of the table (or the center) so i can make things there. i've done this once before, at a charity bazarr in a friends home (raising money for autism) but i had so little space that the only thing i made was a pair of earrings. has anybody else done something like this? did you have luck with that? i would think people would get interested and maybe even ask for a custom piece, but its a pain to lug all my supplies around. would it be better to just pack a few projects and have my supplies on hand but not out? and should i be sitting to the side so all my stuff is together, or in the center so i can be the focal point?

also, side question: if i do another practice set up and upload a picture or 2, would you guys give me feedback? i know i am not very active on here, but i read posts every day and love the advice and projects you all give.
thanks so much!

1) When you are knitting an adult bottom-up sweater, how many inches do you typically knit before beginning your raglan decreases?

2) For my raglan decreases, I'm planning to k2tog/ssk on each side of all markers on every other row. Is my thinking correct on this? Are there other numbers that you prefer for making raglan decreases?

I realize what I use will depend largely on the shape of the purse, and what exterior fabric I'm using. Lately I've been using home decor remnants and embroidered corduroys. I made one with buckram on the inside...and broke 2 needles! (Picked up some denim needles to help with this.) My mom picked up some duck cloth for me, and that has worked a bit better, but the purses are still a bit floppy. Mom also showed me some super-stiff pellon that was fusible on both sides, but it seems WAY too stiff!

So I thought I'd ask the lovely ladies of Crafty Vixens! Here is my run down, maybe someone out there sews like me and has one to recommend:
I've been sewing for quite some time. I mostly work with stretch knits, fur, and muslin like fabrics. I would like to work with some more stretchy fabrics but want a serger to lock my pieces and give it that extra umphf. But I also love to sew fur on to everything. I am a circus performer so stretch is important but so is accessory. (I can always use my sewing machine for fur if the serger is not really that kind of machine...)
Any and all recommendations would be appreciated...
Thanks again!

Bad news: the dying came out very uneven right along the front, where it won't hide. and it's not all over the garment so it doesn't look cool and funky. Instead, it looks like rust stains around the neck line. I tried dying it again, but didn't help. Any other options to even this out? Or do I need to just overdye again w/ a commercial, chemical dye? The yarn is cotton/rayon, and it's not holding up too great to the frequent soaking and washing it's been getting through this process, so I think bleaching is just out.

Art vs. Craft.

What makes it Art?
What makes it Craft?
In these times, is there an actual line anymore?
As an artist/craftsperson, I don't like "crafty"or "art". But some crafty people have convinced me otherwise...........
I insist on NO LABELS!
I think if we glue a couple of days and do all the grouting one day, it will cut down on the mess.

I have done TONS of soccer banners, so design, how-to, etc are not the problem. But with the soccer banners I did not have to worry about long term. This one will be used indoors and out and if I am going to put the time and effort into this, I want it to last!

So I was thinking that I could use the raincoat 'fabric'. This is a clear sheet that you attach (iron?) to what-ever fabric you want to make it rain-proof. But I have never used it before. So I am not quite sure how to go about it. Do I make the whole banner, then apply the stuff to the whole thing, front and back? Or should I apply it piece-mill; to the appliqué' pieces and so on?

Also, does it change the look of the fabrics? I have a dragonfly on my logo, and I found this AWESOME shimmery fabric that is both purple and green- it really looks like dragonfly wings! I would hate to have the weather protector take away the shimmer.

I do plan on buying some and experimenting with scraps of the different fabrics that I want to use, but I thought that perhaps one of you Vixens has used this stuff, or made a banner intended to last!

In the early 20th century, due to a poor economy at home, women flocked to the cities to find wage work. The employers employed them in deplorable conditions in the factories... poor wages, long hours, strict rules about bathroom breaks, etc. But they had no choice... without a job, no wages, no housing... and they were worse off than at home.

100 years later we now sew for fun and now finally for profit if you want to sell your goods on etsy, eBay, or the like.

I buy a lot of clothing at thrift stores. Sometimes I find that even after washing them, heavy perfume smells are coming through.

I've washed one pair of pants twice now, using unscented detergent, and they smell just as strongly of perfume as they did when I purchased them at the thrift store.

Any suggestions for how to get rid of this smell? Usually two washings do it. Should I soak in a baking soda solution before washing? I'm not a fan of perfume, but it's hard to avoid in thrift store clothing for some reason.

About Crafty Vixens tribe:
With over 6500 members, this tribe is the best resource for craft-related postings on tribe.net. When members disregard the guidelines (and this happens at an alarming rate), reading this tribe will require wading through a variety of postings to find the crafty postings... the members of this tribe voted that they did not want that, and I volunteer my time to moderate this tribe and delete non-crafty and mis-placed postings as they occur.

Guidelines:
In general, the guidelines (not rules) that were voted on by this tribes membership are these:

A. All postings must be craft-related. This includes postings in Topics, Photos, Listings, Reviews, etc.

B. Subsequently, all Topics postings must be asking for discussion (about craft-related topics). If you are not asking for discussion, there are other appropriate posting areas: Listings, Reviews, Photos, etc.

Craft or craft-related:
If the product, being shown or discussed, is made by a person it is crafting. Hopefully this encompasses all crafts, it is very difficult to nail this down accurately. Indeed many people have tried, but this is what we have come up with here.

Enforcement:
As the moderator, I send a notification to the member who has made a non-crafty or misplaced post. I remind them of the rules, encourage them to post again in the future, following the guidelines, and remind them that we welcome them as a member. If it is a listing, I generally include a copy of the listing, in case they want to repost it more appropriate tribes, and even offer some suggestions for other tribes (including some of other crafty tribes I moderate where we don't have these guidelines). Then I delete the post after I have notified them. With photographs, if it violates Tribe.com TOU, I delete immediately. If it just violates Crafty Vixens guidelines, I notify them and ask them to delete it (suggesting they be sure they have a copy of their own) with a one day deadline. If it is not removed, after 24 hours I delete the photo.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
As this is a Topics posting, it definitely is asking for discussion. Please post any comments, questions, etc. I particularly would like to hear whether you think these guidelines are still relevant, would you like to take a re-vote on these, or would like to change them (add to them or delete from them), would you like them to be enforced differently?

I've been working on a potty bag -- a bag you take to the potty, not a bag you pee in -- and could use some assistance. There are 3 zipper compartments: one for the pee funnel and tampons, one for TP and wet wipes, one for trash (things that can't be dumped in the porto-potties or buried).

It's basically a gusseted bag with multiple zipper compartments. I had wanted the top to be flat (cover flush with the lining/zipper), but I'm wondering if it might be better to make some kind of lip. I haven't made a bag before and couldn't find any tutorials or examples of something like this anywhere, so I was totally winging it. here's the bag:

front: http://craftyvixens.tribe.net/photos/4cbbbc3e-460b-426f-84ac-22fdb2d10a6d
back: http://craftyvixens.tribe.net/photos/9064f82d-b1af-413d-ae52-d52b3ad411c7
top: http://craftyvixens.tribe.net/photos/4e6c50f1-6776-424d-bec3-b28f767d873c

I'm sure I haven't constructed this in the proper manner and thought you crafty vixens might have some tips. I figure I can always take it apart and adjust if needed. Or even change the whole pattern and just reuse the front and back panels if necessary. The main issue is the bag has gotten ripple-y where I stitched across the top and bottom of the zippers. You can see this in the "top" pictures (click to enlarge if needed). I think this is not showing as prominently in pics as it does in person.

I constructed the inside pockets fully, separate from the outside. Then I attached the outside 4 panels to the top of the inside section (zipper area). Then stitched the outside sides together, doing the top 1" or so by hand (area closest to where the zippers/inside meet the outside). Then attached the bottom panel at 3 sides. Then turned it right side out through the remaining open seam and stitched it together by hand.

any suggestions? thanks. :)

Hello Crafty Vixens!

The SF architecture firm I work for (David Baker + Partners) is throwing a benefit party for Walk SF, a local non-profit working to make walking in the city both safe and fun.

I'm organizing a silent auction that's part of a larger party and am looking for creative contributions inspired by the on-foot experience (though all artworks are welcome).

Artists may choose to donate 50% or 100% of the final bid to Walk SF, and also skip the donation line at the door at the event, which is at our SOMA office on April 18.

Please contact me through Tribe or at jessica@dbarchitect.com if you'd be interested in sharing some of your work or if you'd like more info.

Thanks so much!

BUT, it sat in her living room, uncovered with my sister-in-laws dog that liked to sleep on it and tried to 'dig' a hole in it before she sleeps. So, its all scratched up and sad. Other than boots, I've never owned leather anything but I know you are supposed to care for leather furniture in some way. So what do I do? what can I use to make the scratch marks at LEAST less visible? They are just on the surface, not actual tears in the couch. Shes a small dog.

I guess thats two questions! But mostly, Im concerned about taking care of the scratches. :P

In the past I've only used separating zippers or zippers open at one end. Those I can usually insert without a problem and rather quickly. However, I'm finding that enclosed zippers are my own personal hell.

I'm going through jumpsuits I've made or bought and inserting "pee zippers" so I don't have to take the whole thing off to tinkle. These are zippers, about 12-16" long, running along the top of the inseam. They run up one thigh, across the crotch, and down the other thigh (in other words, side-to-side, not front to back). If I were inserting these in a garment as I was making it, I could just add the zipper as part of the inner leg seam and it would probably be easier. However, I'm inserting them into a garment that is constructed, just opening part of the existing leg seam.

I'm having a really hard time with this. I think I had to take one zipper out 3 times. I'm doing everything I normally do for zipper application -- basting the 2 pieces together, stitching the fabric to the zipper flaps on the inside of the garment, topstitching the garment to the zipper, then removing the basting. The problem is that I can't seem to keep the zipper and fabric aligned straight no matter how carefully I pin or stitch or check. So even if the stitching looks straight from the outside, when I flip it over the zipper flap stitching is all over the place, sometimes really close to the teeth sometimes too close to the edge.

Any tips on this or links to tutorials?
